about stormdeck
stormdeck is a free live weather radar map. It shows real-time United States radar, live National Weather Service severe weather alerts, and global NOAA GFS forecasts — temperature, animated wind, precipitation, and thunderstorm potential — all moving on one scrubbable timeline.
Data sources
- Live radar — the RainViewer global composite, with NOAA NEXRAD via the Iowa Environmental Mesonet as fallback
- Severe weather alerts — the National Weather Service API
- Temperature, wind, precipitation & storm potential — NOAA GFS model output, decoded straight from NOAA's open-data archive
- City names for point forecasts — GeoNames
- Basemap — © OpenStreetMap contributors, tiles built with Protomaps
How it works
The map is rendered with deck.gl and MapLibre and served from AWS, by John Carmack. Alerts refresh every few minutes, the forecast layers follow each six-hour GFS model cycle, and one timeline scrubs radar, temperature, wind, and precipitation together.
stormdeck is not an official weather source: live radar lags by several minutes, the forecast rasters are coarse 0.25° model output, and any layer can fail silently. For decisions involving life or property, use weather.gov and local emergency guidance.
